Low Income College Grant

Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant

If you are a student looking for additional funding in order to make up the cost of your college education, you’ll know just how hard it is to find money to help make ends meet.  Well, if you qualify as a low income student you may just qualify for a Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant or (or FSEOG).

What is a FSEOG?

A Federal Supplemental Educational Opportunity Grant is a need-based grant that is awarded to low income undergrad students to help them pay for college tuition.  Each year a participating institution will apply for a FSEOG allocation which is then awarded in an amount based on a specific formula.   This means that there is a limited amount of money available for the college or university to award to those students who apply.

Who is Eligible for a FSEOG?

If the student attends one of the 3,800 colleges or universities that participate in FESOG, and if the students meet specific eligibility requirements then they may be eligible for this supplemental grant. Students.

One of the specifications of a FSEOG is that the college or university award the money to students based on need.  Therefore, the higher your financial need, the more likely you will be to be able to receive this supplemental money.  You must be able to demonstrate your financial need, which brings us to how to apply for this supplemental grant.

How to Apply for a FSEOG

Applying for a FSEOG is actually quite simple.  All it involves is filling out a FAFSA (Free Application for federal Student Aid).  This is the same form that you would fill out to see if you qualify for a PELL Grant.  When this form is filled out, the student will automatically be informed as to whether or not they qualify for a FSEOG or not as well as any other government programs (including loans) that will be available to help you pay for your education.

How to Fill Out a FAFSA

Keep in mind that the actual process of filling out the FAFSA can be quite time consuming.  It requires that you have access to your own and your parent’s financial information (including tax returns) as well as knowing which colleges you plan on attending, or are looking at attending.  It is highly recommended that you take a look at the website before you being the application process, get a list of the materials that you will need to have to fill out the form, and then begin the application process.
