The world needs good hair dressers, and good hair dressers start with a good cosmetology program. So if you are interested in getting your cosmetology training you may want to look into the types of cosmetology scholarships and grants that are available.
Types of Scholarships and Grants Available
There are several kinds of scholarships and grants available for those who are looking to get their cosmetology training. First of all, there are scholarships available from the cosmetology schools themselves. These monies are given to students on an as-needed basis. The need can be financial or it can be awarded to those who show merit or skill in specific areas.
Each grant or scholarship is usually awarded for different reasons and you must meet the specifications of the grant or scholarship in question in order to qualify for the money in question. For more information on these scholarships, visit your school’s financial aid office.
These are also independent scholarships and grants that are available from institutions and organizations that have a vested interest in seeing to it that there are excellent hairdressers out there. So let’s take a look at some of the types of grants and scholarships that you will find. Most of them are through the cosmetology schools themselves.
Examples of Cosmetology Scholarships
Sport Clips Scholarships. These scholarships are given out by the American Association of Cosmetology Schools and are awarded in the amount of $1,000 each per student. Eligible students have to be attending AACS accredited schools. For more information on these scholarships please visit: Beauty Schools Cosmetology Scholarships
Dream Shears/Trade Essentials Scholarship. These $500 scholarships were available to ten different students from AACS associated cosmetology schools. But, as of 2015, they are no longer offered.
OPI Scholarships. Every year OPI gives six $500 scholarships from the Schaeffer Family. For more information on the scholarship and the application process, please see: OPI Scholarship
A Note About Grants
When it comes to cosmetology grants, most grants are given out by the cosmetology schools themselves not the AACS. This means that you will need to contact each school individually in order to determine what sorts of grants they have available. If you meet the specifications listed by the grant you may actually stand a chance of being awarded the assigned money.
Putting it All Together
While you may not get a lot of money from any one scholarship or grant, by putting together several scholarships and/or grants you may actually be able to pay for your entire cosmetology training program. So don’t be shy about putting in for as many of the scholarships and grants as you qualify for. And don’t stick only to this list, but check into scholarships and grants that may be available from other sources in your area. Here’s a hint, by checking with the local cosmetology schools you can find lists of scholarships and grants that may be available from local organizations.
